I've come to the conclusion that 2 boys is just too much for my 8 pullets. While i have 13 babies in the brooder, its just going to take too long for them all to grow enough to get the boys off the current 8 ladies. So now the hard part in deciding which of my fine boys is going to end up in the oven. (My main goal with the roosters is to hatch some babies to replace the current pullets when they age, so not very many chicks. I also like the idea of the rooster looking out for the girls)
So our 2 handsome contestants are Freddie and Spike!
Freddie is my light brahma. He's quite the large boy, standing at around 3 ft tall and 10 lb's. He's the hens favorite, but he's not actually very active at the breeding part. He's very spooky and flighty and i doubt he would actually risk his tail for anyone but himself. Because of his spazzy nature he is hard to catch and runs away from people. He is convinced that me and my husband can shoot lighting out of our hands (but actually he runs into the hot fence alot). When i let them free range, he usually coerces two pullets to go with him into the bushes, and leaves the rest of the flock behind. Freddie has quite the crow, usually lasting for 15 to 30 second and tapers off into an almost wheeze.
Spike is contestant number two! He is my buff Brahma. He is a little bit smaller than Freddie, but i think just as good looking. He can be a little rougher with the ladies, because they all won't squat for him, but he definitely gets the job done far more often then Fred. One hen however hates him, when he tries to mount her she gets super pissed and chases him off. He is far more friendly with people, will come up to you for treats and doesn't run away when you go out to catch him. He has been a little aggressive towards me and my husband, by biting our hands but we're working on fixing that behavior. I also believe he would fight to the death if a predator came near the ladies. When he is out free ranging he always stays with the flock and lets everyone know when he's found something tasty to eat.
So who should end up as Dinner?
