I have two beautiful, adorable Speckled Sussex girls who are SOOOOOO friendly and entertaining.

Speckled Sussex and after those the Dark Brahmas. I've had the Light Brahmas and one of the males was the most evil sucker...he tasted REALLY good. His son was one of the sweetest birds but also got me and was able to dislocate my knee. I guess he didn't know it was me because once he saw me hit the ground you could see him thinking "I am SO sorry...I didn't know it was you!" and he didn't come back to finish the job. Course my screaming could have scared the poo out of him...

The Dark Brahmas are generally larger and the pencilling on the females is simply beautiful.

i have a pair of young barred rocks; a rooster and a pullet. They are absolutely adorable!
the rooster is more friendly than the isa brown girls in there!
they are intelligent birds and terrible sticky beaks! they follow me around right on my heels to see what i have/what i'm doing/what's going on! they're very cute to watch investigate things. If i hold something in my hand, the little girl will jump up to try and mug me of it she's so fearless, yet not agressive, i'm just not giving it to her fast enough!

They're very good layers and don't make many of the normal chicken noises (clucky and carrying on, the rooster still crows obviously) so they're good for in cities and towns.
i'd love to buy some more. i'd highly recommend them!
i have a buff orphington rooster in my pen too, she's terribly handsome and protects the girls well, but he's not very friendly (not agressive, just doesn't want to be near me). Though he is a rooster and they're known the be like that.

Hey welcome to byc! I wanted to post 'cause we have all the breeds you're interested in. They are all in our first generation birds so they are about a year and a half. The friendliest by far out of every chicken we have had so far the buff orpington has been super kind and is a bit of a lap chicken. Although if there is somethings going on like a rake being busted out or a shovel, or anything really then the barred rocks are all over it. One of our four barred rocks are broody and well into her 2nd week on a six pack of eggs. The SLW is a bit of an aggressor. The Light Brahma is a sweetie but her name is Lovely. Rightly named she is very sweet but not huge on being handled. So I guess my picks would be Buff Orpington, Barred Rocks, Light Brahmas, The the SLW. We have made a note in the past that we won't try the Wyandotte breed again. You might want to try cochins also. They have a very calm disposition. Mine have been hand raised and most are very human friendly and just adorable. Great mamas too!

Too many breeds to limit yourself though. Once you get goin it will be easier to get new ones that peak your interest. It's a lot like tattoos really. The first few will be a challenge to pick out but once you get goin you'll just be happy be goin to pick up a few more. Enjoy!

Light Brahmas, Barred Rocks and Speckled Sussex. In that order.

We had a light brahma hen when I was a kid and I absolutely LOVED her. She was huge and one time went broody. covered 30 eggs! and hatched and cared for all of them.

My personal order of what I have... My BOs are super shy, Rocks come closer, RSL closer yet and, my EE will come lay next to me.

Thanks everyone for all the great input! I think I have narrowed it down to a couple Brahmas (either light or dark, haven't decided yet) and a couple Barred Rocks! If anyone has anymore info, please feel free to share! Thanks again!
