Hey there yall!
Ive narrowed it down to two breeds.
Black Jersey Giants
or
Barred Rocks

The lady in the city up the road has the BJG for $15 a piece (is that high?? They are 08 spring I think)
and someone has barred rocks for $5.

I want something that lays eggs on a reg basis and would be a good meat bird.
I also need a good with kids chicken.

Which one would be a better pick?

I love my BR good layers very patient with the kids, so much in fact that I've just added more!

BRs are easily tame, lay great, and are a pretty good size so would be just fine for meat.

$15 aint too high for any bird, really. Heck, we sell just mutt layers for up to $30 around here

How much room do you have? BR are a favorite here, I'm planning to get one when I get my flock.

This is a great tool for narrowing down choices. It will give you more options than just the JG and the BR but it has good breed discriptions once you click on one.

I used this when I first started choosing my breeds. At least according to MPC, BR lay 4 LG/wk while the JG lay 3 XL/wk. Giants take a long time to mature too.

BRs are the best and smartest...IMO anyway. And sweet as can be. And Bess is now laying an egg almost on a daily basis since she has gotten used to us.
