I can't seem to find out this information anywhere on the internet. I was trimming my dove's bottom beak when he jerked and somehow I cut the top and bottom beak to where the blood line was. The bleeding clotted soon but I see that I really goofed. I only clipped a wee portion of the top beak and bottom. He is finally eating good but stays puffed up; my question is: How long is his tongue? I know they have a tongue but not sure how far it goes to end of beak. Also other question is: Will his beak grow back to normal? Can you tell me if there is an avian vet that can answer this? We do not have one in our rural area. I've been trimming is lower beak for years with no problem until lately. Thank you -

I'm sorry this has happened.

the tongue reaches very close to the top of the beak, in the inside. It is hard to say exactly, but, you can look by carefully forcing the beak open to see if any of it was removed.

it's beak should grow back to normal. provide lots of calcium, such as oyster shell, crushed up cuttle bone, chicken layer pellets, etc.

I cant think of an avian vet who is a member. Sorry.

why do you need to clip the beak so much? Does it really grow that fast? I'm more I selectable in pigeons, not doves. But their care is simular. With my 40 pigeons, I have never trimmed a beak.

is you do need to trim it though, use a nail file. don't clip them. That way this won't happen again.

I hope this helps! and welcome to BYC!

Thank you for your information. His lower beak always would grow to about 1/4th an inch or maybe less - but it would interfere with his eating. I think he was inbred. His toe nails also grow quite long. He was always good about my trimming him and I have a special beak cutter which is a circular item and worked well. I don't think he'd let me file. I let it grow a bit so it is easier to cut and normally I will separate the top beak before cutting. This time he jerked, I moved to quickly and off went top and bottom! He is eating like crazy now - so that's good but he still hasn't coo'd or preened. I had a time trying to reply so hopefully this came out right.

I also have another male white dove that just turned 22 years old! He is in excellent health and going strong. Casper is 14 years old. I also have a cockatiel that is healthy and he is 18 years old.

I figured it out! but,,, if you would like some help, this is what you do to quote a reply from someone: if you are trying to reply to one comment, just hit reply in the bottom left of their message. If you are replying to several messages, hit quote message, and the quote will go from + to -. Once you are done selecting messages to qoute, you hit in the empty white reply space insert quotes, and then insert them AGAIN. :) if you need more help, let me know. :)

you obviously take great care of your birds! 22 years is a good life for a dove!
