Hi Everyone,

My W.R. rooster, aka HANK, literally attacked me this am when I went out to get eggs. He has been seperated from the hens for the past 3-4 months. He literally was biting off their combs and ripping the back of their necks so I sectioned a corner of the coop off for him so he can not get to them. They have all neen raised together, 4 black autralorps, 7 barred rocks, 3 white rocks, all hens and Hank, who we thought was originally a hen and then never had the heart to kill him until now. So I go and let him out this am to give fresh water and let him have some "fun" with the girls, just like every morning but, this am he immediately attacked me, biting my hand and leg and continously tried to jump at my face and I just continued to knock him down with my other sneaker. This went on for about 5 - 10 minutes until I finally had to give him a good wack!. He eventually went back to his corner on his own. What should I do? Are white rock roosters noterious as being so viciuous. I have little girls who I will now not allow to come out to the coop with me.

You don't need a rooster, and you really don't need a mean rooster, especially if you have young children. I'd send him off to freezer camp. There are methods to try to dominate him, and they work, sometimes, sometimes they don't. I got rid of a big Buff Orpington roo who was mean. I've got a bantam Easter Egger now, he's manageable, but I'm careful if he's out and there are other people around. If I had small children I wouldn't keep him, either. Every once in awhile I pick him up and carry him around, he hates it, but it makes him know who is boss.

If I had fought with my roo for half that amount of time, I would kill him. I sent my nephew and daughter in to the garden yesterday because the hens had gotten into the raised bed somehow and one of the roos was going to attack my nephew and I told him to kick him and not let him jump on him. He had to do it twice. So I can't let small children in for sure.....he is almost 14. I think he was sizing up my nephew and knew he was smaller than me. I will let my roo be because my hens are all fine and so far I, at least can control him. But let him become a danger to my hens and me........thats another story.

I hate to hear of a mean roos-especially white Rock. My dad's white Rock is the gentlest boy, he even has a crippled hen in his coop and is so loving.

If you really don't want to kill him, like realllllllly don't want, then you'd better be prepared to act like an aggressive rooster to him. He needs a major additude ajustment. Kicking, unfortunatly, is one of the best ways to do this. Also a good way is to randomly rush at him, making loud noises especially. That is just like another rooster...If he dosen't respond to, I'd say, three weeks of constant , on-your-guard rooster imitations, then he goes. Period.
There is precious little room in a backyard flock for a rooster, and an aggressive rooster is a menace. Hope my advice helps, and good luck!

My roo got a little aggressive and I took a stick to him. After about a minute of "combat", he back down. I continue toward him, chasing him for a few seconds. Now he avoids me except when I'm bringing in some goodies for them to eat. My son will take the stick in the yard with him and the roo avoids him.. He remembers that stick!
