We just butchered a couple of year old roosters and there are white specks under the first layer of membrane. Any idea what this could be? We've had older chickens that we have had for many years and they had lots of these specks! Parasites? Bacteria?

Laminosioptes cysticola

Laminosioptes cysticola, also referred to as the fowl cyst mite, is a subcutaneous acarid ectoparasite. The name of the disease associated with infestation of L. cysticola is called laminosioptiasis. The parasite penetrates into the bird's subcutaneous tissue, where it feeds and eventually dies, the dead parasites are then encysted in collagen and cysts may evolve to calcification.

Hosts: It occurs in chickens, turkeys, pheasants, geese, psittacines, and passerines worldwide.

Thank you for adding the description and source reference. I joined this forum just to be able to include that comment. Still figuring out how things work around here but I’m very impressed. Trying to add literature or studies into any of the FB groups is a nightmare.
