If I put solid white and tuxedo Coturnix quail in the same pen and white and tuxedo are both recessive, will I get a mix of each?

Next question, Would a pair of Coturnix be okay (happy) together, or is that too much to ask of one girl and one boy?

1st question: You'll get a good deal of both, but if i had to guess probably more A & M (or english white pretty much the same thing now a days but always a good thing to say both whites)

the reason I say that is the TUx is already holding the white gene (which is visable and what makes it a tux) and the A & M (or white) IS white.... so as punnett squares go you got lots of whites in your future. You'll probably get several whites with tux markings on the back but very minimally, I consider these tuxedos that just have "high white" (high white is a term used for fancy rats with more white than color I just use it for coturnix with the same sort of deal because that I know of no one talks about this lol). My theory is (for these highwhites) if you breed them to a solid tibetan (of any color) that the birds SHOULD be VERY white....and if bred to a Tuxedo you may get more and more of a white bird until you have an entirely white bird lol. Which may or may not be your goal. I already have more pure white coturnix than I need so my goal is just relaly nicely marked tuxedos

2nd question: If the roo is peaceful and not aggressive yep! It will work! I have two pens with only a pair in them the roos are very kind...if anything the hen is the boss.

Not all can be trusted like that though as you well know

I deffinatly dont reccomend it to newbies who dunno what they are getting into/dunno what to look for but people who know their roos can deffiantly do it. If say you have a bachelor pad of roos or a group pen and one roo is dominant over the other roos, take out the less dominant roo and put it ina pair with a hen and normally you will see the hen take control (chattering and chasing the roo even if at first if the roo is chasing her and mating with her sooner or later....in my experience the hen becomes boss )

I also have a pen with 2 hens and one roo, that roo is a little bit more dominant but i've seen the hens put him in his place so bad he was poking his head through the bars like 'GET ME OUTTA HEEERREE!!!!!"

I have a great mental picture of that now.

So, the quail I have are yours. I have a bunch of light colored ones that I am assuming are goldens due to other pictures i've seen. Then a group that look like the goldens but darker. Then a smaller group that are much darker, but appear to have little masks on. One tuxedo, one white and one that is red looking. Any ideas?

Okay the one group of goldens that you're saying are lighter, are you meaning their pattern is lighter (the black spots) or are you meaning the actual gold?

theres 3 possibilities in my goldens

1. if they came from my jumbo brown pen (that is no longer existing) they are more than likely the darker goldens and will mature to be deciently sized birds

2. the lighter ones if they are smaller looking than the others are probably from my Rosetta birds....for some reason (atleast my birds) rosetta to rosetta is giving me almost nothing but Goldens lol...they are lighter and smaller these and the number 3 option seem to mature with more maroon spots of color on their back than black

3. i'm getting what looks like cinnamon goldens from my Cinnamon hen over my no longer existing golden roo... the chicks that hatched out had red stripes instead of the bold black stripes....I have two maturing both are males but their color is much ligher, not as many patterns as the normal goldens

you say you have a group of darker goldens... are they actually goldens or are you lookign at normal jumbo browns? They are patterend pretty simliar to goldens but the big difference is color

then the darker smaller group with little masks on...hmmm... kind of sounds like tuxedos that aren't marked as nicely.... are these masks with white???

Red looking? does it look like this:

i'm unsure how old your birds are I really can't think lol!!! so if they are sitll fuzzy chicks let me know and i'll rumage up some pics for you to tell me what yours look like

Also your white is not an A & M chick (just a heads up) I removed my A & M pen a while back so unless it's egg said A & M on it (which i doubt) it came from my tuxedos
smile.png
As Tux over tux you get a percentage of white
smile.png
I dont call them A & Ms just because they're not pure

I'm going to take pictures of them when I get home tonight. Should make it easier for you.

Thanks for all the help!

Oh, yeah...the chicks are 11 days old...it's amazing how fast they start feathering out isn't it!!! I feel like everyday when I get home they're bigger and have more adult feathers.
