Whitewashing?

We are looking to whitewash our chicken coop. I've read thru some threads and am totally confused. Please help.

We want to use the whitewash on the walls, floor and perches in the coop. Which Lime is best to use? I obviously don't want them burned or irratated. Also, would it be better to use Food grade DE instead of the Lime?

make sure your whitewash is safe for animals.. and i use d/e instead of lime.. no burning and it keeps the coop from smelling and the bugs off
