I have the hatching bug.

I discovered that one of my best broody hens is going broody. I started to pack her off to Broody Jail last night, then I hesitated. She's a great mother, very experienced... I want to put some eggs under her!

I've never had shipped eggs before. I have read that it's okay to ship in hot weather, and I have also read that it isn't.

So I'm wondering who out there is willing to risk it. And maybe hear some experiences with summer egg shipping and hatching.

Please help me!

We had eggs shipped to us for our broody a couple weeks to go. They are not due to hatch til next Friday, so I don't know how well the hatch rate is. We had no broken eggs and the people were very nice. I think shipping eggs in the summer is OK.

I've been shipping eggs all summer, with no ill effects. If the eggs get to you quickly (like 2-3 days like they should) they should be fine. Sometimes the goofballs at the P.O. will leave them sit in the sun, that's where your problem comes in. But some people use cold packs for hot-weather shipping.

I received a shipment of Cochin eggs this morning, and it's in the mid-80's here this week. They were extremely well packaged with bubble wrap, packing peanuts, and an ice pack to top it all off and keep the eggs from overheating in transit.

It's fine to ship in the summer as long as the eggs are packaged properly.

I received two orders last week in 90˚ heat. The eggs were room temp. I have chicks developing, too! The only downer was that my silly Silkie that was sitting decided to stop as soon as I put eggs under her. :lol Good thing I have a bator.

Typically, if eggs are packed really well, they are actually insulated inside the box from potential damage in short term heat exposure. While they take 2 days to get to the destination, that doesn't mean they are sitting in a hot truck for 2 days. They are usually in cooled locations or on air craft which has normal temps. I think people make too much of shipping during extreme temps.

Personally, I like getting eggs better when it is warmer, eggs freeze a lot faster than you think. The eggs have to get pretty hot to mess them up.
