I'm brooding chicks in my kitchen. They're 3 weeks old and I like listening to them. I like being around them so they're acculturating to people. Basically, they feel like pets. Everyone stops by their kennel up on the counter and spends time with them. Everybody in the extended family. Everyone who stops by. They're so engaging!

But here's the thing: they're messy. I mean MESSY!

This is my 3rd go round with brooding inside. I've learned something with each batch. I thought this time I could keep the dust and bedding down by using excelsior pads instead of pine shavings and by putting paper down inside the kennel underneath the bedding and 3-4" up the sides. And then there's paper under the kennel pulled up the sides to keep them from scratching stuff out as well. I'm not sweeping up 4-6 times every day. Still, there's dust and down 2' around the perimeter.

I'll be able to move the kennel out to the chicken run in another week or 2. I'll miss them but I'll be so glad to have that counter back and to have it clean again.

How do you guys who keep house chickens keep their dust and dander down? I can't even figure out what they're manufacturing dust out of...

I used old towels, but I’ve only done it once, but it worked, though chicks are very messy. :barnie

Thanks to each of you.

They're bigger now and it's really getting out of hand so they'll go on the patio to come in at night for the next couple weeks and then they'll transition to the chicken run to assimilate.

I will miss all their lovely sounds. It was like having a flock of canaries for 3 weeks. But time for them to be chickens I guess...
