How many use a electric plucker? I have been looking at prices and they are kind of high. Is it really that hard to clean them by hand? I was thinking about using my turkey fryer as a scalder.

My wife and I hand plucked our last batch of boilers. About 8-10 I think. I didn't think it was hard. The feathers basically came off just by rubbing your hands over the bird.

I could see getting a elcetric one if you are time-bound and had is get it done quickly.

I splurged and bought a Featherman Pro.

If you scald right, they are incredible. Worst case, you just have to pick a few off of the wings and out of the crevices.

When all was done right, they went right from the plucker to the gutting table. Not even a pin feather to pick.

We are building a Whizbang type plucker. Will have $200 in it when finished. Had a lot of stuff that I could use, motor and more. If you need a complete commercial setup check out craigslist for Houston, in farm & garden. Plucker, scalder and other stuff $2500. I've got 50 Red Rangers that are almost ready, another month, but with them out of business... not sure what I will do. Plus I need to do another bunch of chickens later this year, plus turkeys this year. So I'm building.

We just scalded and hand plucked... did 19 birds last Saturday, took about 6 hours total. 7-10 seconds in 150-160°F water is all you need. I take them by the feet, and plunk about 7 times, making sure to get the wings all the way in the water. By the time the bird is soaked, they're ready to pluck. Nuthin' to it.
