Who keeps chickens in New England?

I would like 3-5 chickens. People friendly, kid friendly, foraging capability, I live in RI so 4 season sustainable, free range on my 1/2 acre but also coopable. I know nothing about chickens. Fill me in folks! What kind of chickens should I get??

Rhode Island reds or red sex links. They are cold / heat tolerant, don't mind being cooped, good egg producers and somewhat friendly (at least the females are). I have 6 red sex-link pullets now, they are my first flock and are only 11 weeks old, but...so far so good. There is some good info on this site for selecting breeds too, look in the "learning center" and "breeds" sections for more info...
