First off, I know this is silly. BUT I just got my first egg and I'm over the moon! Haha! I'm trying to figure out which chicken to hug. ;)
It could either be a black australorp, a buff Orpington or a Barred Rock. My barred rock is the oldest by a good 2 weeks but they are all between 20-24 weeks. My australorp has been squatting for a couple days whenever I get close, so I was guessing it could be her. But the other ladies have been mature enough for a couple weeks as well.

ps. I have baby hands. This egg is much smaller than it looks. About an 1 3/4".

Your guess?? :)

Who has the reddest comb? Who is singing. I couldn't tell you by the color of the egg my barreds dont lay spotted and my black astralorp turned out to be an Easter egger

Combs are all nice and red. They all talk a lot. As far as their behaviors, it's tough to tell. They free range on the property and they eat our grain crop so I'm guessing the speckle is the protein? Not sure exactly but when I was searching for each type of chicken and their eggs, I didn't figure out a match.

Welcome to BYC....and congrats of your first eggs!

There is one to tell who is laying and who is not, can be handy as your pullets come into lay, and good practice in examining your birds to learn seeing what's 'normal'.

Vent Appearance:
Dry, tight, and smaller - usually not laying.
Moist, wide, and larger - usually laying.

Pelvic Points, feel for the 2 bony points(pelvic bones F-F) on either side of vent:
Less than 2 fingertip widths apart usually means not laying.
More than 2 fingertip widths apart usually means laying.
(Spacing is relative with chickens size and humans finger size.)
