I tried a quick search and gave up...what breed or breeds lay the really cool looking dark brown (almost chocolate colored) eggs?

Welsummer (reddish) and Maran (dark chocolate).

But in both cases you get better egg color from a reputable breeder than a hatchery.

I am new to chickens so take my reply lightly, but I have a friend that has coco maran hens (don't know if that is spelled correct) and she tells me she gets really nice dark brown eggs. Plus the name makes them sound like they would lay dark brown eggs....

Cuckko Marans lay a darker brown egg than say a Rhode Island Red. However the Black Copper Maran lays a much darker egg THey are the ones most refer to as a chocolate eggs layer. But make sure before buying they are not hatchery stock. I have breeder stock myself and they are now laying again form their molt doing a fertility test hatch now before selling anymore . But feel free to pm me if intrested I am caught up on all orders so you could be first on my list and hopefully in just a few weeks I could ship you some. Thansk Livia

You can get excellent quality Welsummers from Estes Hatchery

I'm going to hijack your thread for a minute.

I've recently started getting very dark eggs too and I don't know which girl is laying them. Could they be from my Speckled Sussex or SL Wyandotte? I suspect one of them since they're my two youngest girls.
