Is this a one time gig or an ongoing long term job?
If it's one time, I'd just stay home.
If it's long term, it's a much harder proposition, but not unusual.
Many people have to do a weekly commute to work, one spouse staying at home to work another job and/or take care of kids - there's no choice, it's necessity not a luxury.
Having someone on hand and 'trained' to take care of livestock/pets is something that's good to have in the bag in case of an emergency and this might be a good opportunity to set that up. Talk to your friends about who takes care of their animals when they have to leave. Might find another resource to use or at least open the door to discuss it without actually asking.
I have one chicken friend nearby that we have each others backs for emergencies but longer term deals we make other plans...I just don't go and she has someone else who can cover for vacations. I 'chickensat' for some other friends for years when they went on 1-2 weeks vacations, they had to keep the chooks confined and I stopped by once a day to feed, water and gather eggs on my way home from work.....the eggs were my pay and after I lost my job they would give me gas money as it was a 15 mile round trip.
