Why are eggs egg shaped?

For ease of exiting the reproductive tract.
And for structural integrity.

Thank you! Now I know.

But that leads to another question that I should have included: Which end comes out first?
Great documentary on PBS. The Egg; The Perfect Invention. Either on Nature or Nova. Can't remember which one. The author goes into detail. And yes the egg flips and comes out big side first.

Hold an egg in your palm and wrap all of your fingers and thumb around it tightly. Then try to squeeze it until it breaks.
They are hard shelled, but this structure prevents breaking in the reproductive tracts, which could kill a bird.
