Hello! This could be long but I'm going to try and keep this in a nutshell. So our hen turkey eggs didn't work out for her so I let her sit on 2 chicken eggs. The 1 hatched first. It was outside of the coop with the rest of the flock. Its too cold for it to be out and had no way to get in the coop. After becoming a ninja and sneaking in to get the chick (my tom turkey was NOT having me come in. Idk why? Being protective maybe?) Anyways, put the chick back in, hen turkey went in also. I thought all was fine. Checked on them 2 hrs later and the baby chick was almost dead! Found under a board, straight legs, cold, tongue out. Awful. I brought it in, rotated warm hand towels and brought it back to life!! Oh the sounds of the peeping ❤😊 Also the second chick hatched. I now have both in garage under light. I'm scared the same thing will happen 😔
MY QUESTION: did I do something wrong? Or why did the other chickens do this? Why didn't the baby get back under the turkey?
I'm confused on what went wrong. I don't want it happening again in the future.

Thanks friends!

*for any curiosity, the chicks will be a mix between a brahma and a speckled sussex ❤

I've not had luck with turkey hens being good mothers. They do best when they are totally separated otherwise they don't always bond with their young. You need to set a hen turkey up properly for success.

It's best that you raise the chicks. It also isn't good for turkeys and chickens to be raised in a way that they don't understand what species they are. It can cause problems down the road with aggression between chickens and turkeys.
