I did it because there are times I am dressed for work or to go somewhere nice and I want to take a moment to check for eggs. I dont want to smell like a chicken for having spent only moments in the coop. One great side benefit is that I had some young hens that thought the laying boxes were a pretty cool place to roost. It made it very easy when I went out to shut the coop door to raise the lid and roust the hens so they would roost like they should.
By the way it took about two weeks, these girls had the habit when I got them, but the now roost on the roost instead of in the box.
