Why does he do this?

Every night my hens go inside the coop but my rooster never does. He just lays on top of the run. Why doesn’t he go in with him?

Also, he is about 5 months old, is he sexually mature at this age?

How old are the hens? Maybe they pick on him or there is not enough room to perch? You could always place him in there if neither is the case. Maybe he hasn't learned to go in there yet?
He is a cockerel and should be able to mate, but not know how to be suave about it yet.
How does he get along when not in the coop?

The hens are all under one year old. There is plenty of roosting space. When he was in the introduction coop/run he would go inside on his own.

He is skittish around the girls but they don’t pick on him. He really loves the Cochin and one of my Isa Browns.

Hi, what do your roosts look like? Are they round or flat? Fav's don't grip well and like flat roosts, they fall off round ones.

I believe they are flat. I will check again in the morning.

I am not an expert but I have had several roosters now. None of them slept in the coop past 8 weeks or so. Mine always sleep on top of the coop (in a covered, secure run) I guess it's a "rooster thing"

The thing is he is outside of the run. On top of the coop

Have you ever moved him to the roost?
I just got my first cockerel about a month ago. When he was first introduced, I worried he would not make it inside before the auto door closed, but he did. When I checked on him he was inside a nest box, so I placed him on the roost and ever since he is on the roost when I check. He is 8 months old. Not sure what he did at 5 months.

I’d wait til dark and move him to roost, he might just be intimidated by all the pretty hens ...
