I have a question ....
I was under the impression that when a hen hatched eggs and raise the baby chicks we don't have to worry about pasty butts. Actually, I have two hens raising chicks and none of the chicks have pasty butt. However, one of those chicks that hatched yesterday has pasty butt. He/she is the only baby chick that has pasty butt and I don't know why this baby chick is different from the other ones. I have cleaned his/her butty and put some Vaseline and also added some apple cider vinegar to their water. Has any of you had this happened ?

There are always exceptions to the rule. Was this chick hatched under a hen?
I've had a lot of people disagree with this but I believe pasted vent is the result of an improper balance of gut bacteria. The gut micro biome is responsible for proper digestion and absorption of nutrients. I've seen lots of people point to heat or cold.
Hen raised chicks get probiotics from consuming some of the healthy hen's feces.
I give a probiotic powder called Gro2Max formulated specifically for chickens in chicks' first water and have never had an artificially incubated chick have pasted vent since I've started doing so.

yes, this baby chick has hatched under a hen, the same as his/her siblings and this one is the only one with pasty butts. I do have some probiotic powder and I will add it to their water.

Thanks

I hadn't had it, up until my last broody hatch. The chick got it a few times. He grew out of it. I had a brooder chick with it too at the same time. I was thinking too it was something he wouldn't get because the heat balance is right under a hen.

Actually, now that you mentioned about not getting the heat balance right under a hen... that makes me think that this could be the reason. Mamma hen has 6 chicks under her and they are all different days apart. This little one was the last one to hatched, and while he wants to spend more time under mamma to get warm, the hen and the rest of the chicks are more worried about foraging.

It wasn't much bother for me though, I cleaned him off a couple times, and then he just stopped getting it.
Hopefully your chick won't get it too much.
