"Why the heck do you have chickens?"

I got my first little chirpy box of 6 in April because at the time I was pregnant and wanted something to keep me busy. I ended up losing the baby a couple months after that but i still had my chooks and my sweet little only child... So yeah, i admit i use chicks as a fluffy little filler of the hole in my heart. This new batch is here around the time the new baby was supposed to be here.

I have since been asked why i like them... Why i keep getting more etc...?
What made you decide to start raising chicks/chickens?

I always wanted chickens, still have 2 of my original small flock and added 4 newbies this year. They lift my spirits and banish boredom

Thank you! I always wanted chickens too since i was a kid and i played in my grammas abandoned hen house.

So very sorry for the loss of your beloved child. Time will not erase the wound, but will make it more bearable.

I have chickens b/c they are multi purpose units: They make my breakfast, provide a wonderful base for a chicken stew, till and fertilize my garden, destroy weeds and insects, turn my compost, provide lots of amusement. They also tickle my need for ongoing education. Study of animal behavior, intelligence, nutritional needs, embryology. Give me an opportunity to play with power tools to build new coops, tractors, brooders, incubators.

Sorry to hear about the baby, I lost my little boy at 8 months pregnant.
I was raised on a farm with chickens, guineas, cows etc. Oh, and one BIG rooster named RoHo. We had to climb up the A frame of the swing to get away from him lol.
Twenty years ago I got 24 pullets, rock Cornish or something, they laid eggs when they matured then a pack of wild dogs or what have you broke in and ate the ass end out of all of them. They didn't even eat them. Never got them again.
New man in my life and had room and even a coop. I got 8 straight runs. They were about 6 months when something got them too! Then I saw the ducks...and it was on from there! I now have four.
We have since bought a log home and built our own coop. I love going down there everyday after work and just unwind and talk to my girls. They are always happy to see me. I always take lettuce with me and the ducks love it! The chicks get oats and maple mix they love! We have 3 grey and 5 black chickens and 4 Cayuga ducks.

Im sorry for your loss too. i was 5 months both times. Not trying anymore. I will save my heart for the fluffs.
