I live near the mountains and during the year all kinds of small finches and quail come down to my house and easily slip through the wiring on my chicken coop and gorge themselves on chicken feed.

I don't know how to keep them out of the coop besides buying small expensive wiring with money we don't have the leisure to spend. Is there an alternative to keeping these pests out?

Feeding the chickens in an enclosed coop may help for a bit, but the wild critters eventually figure things out. There are treadle type feeders, but I have absolutely no experience with them. Hopefully someone that has used them will post.

I never ate a finch, but if the quail were coming in my pen, I would be trapping them. Then, I could be the one "gorging."
