I just thought I'd share a little something. I can't have chickens yet, but maybe I can watch over a few little ones indirectly... Yesterday my two dobermans, Jasper & Vixen, and I went for a walk up the gravel road and back, and then walked down the railroad tracks (non-busy switching tracks
) at the edge of our property. The dogs scared up a Canadian Goose on our side of this drainage ditch, and there was another on the other side in the newly sprouted corn field! The way they carried on, honking so much, it sounded like a big city at rush hour! Then the dogs alerted to something in the grass, and I knew what it had to be immediately! I got them out of there quickly and took a peep myself. Yes it was a nest, with 3-4 eggs in it and 2-3 out side of it. So I told momma and papa goose we were leaving, and we scooted out of there before we got wing whipped!
Momma and Papa Goose followed us on the other side of the drainage ditch for 25 yards or so before Momma went back to sitting. Her nest doesn't have much cover, so I hope she is successful. Now I have them, a robin in my barn with a clutch she is sitting on, and at least one couple of ringneck pheasants about 100 yards from the geese. My own little flock of wild ones to look after!!
