We have a lot of wild sumac in our backyard. I was wondering if I fence around the sumac could that act as protection from the hawks, instead of covering the run.

The sumac creates a dense covering, especially in the summer, but is very small in diameter, so the chickens would be able to the walk through comfortably.

I have a picture, but I'm not having any luck trying to post it.

Thanks,

Joanne

Yes, shrubs can be useful cover vs hawks (won't *prevent* hawk attacks, but makes them less likely, and less likely to succeed). Just remember that if any branches arch over the fence, it can be a raccoon (etc) entry route as well.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat
