Hi all! I have a mixed free-range flock and am trying to id some of my chicks. Hopefully can post pics later for your speculation

But, my basic question is will a BSL hen, when crossed with a non-barred rooster (specifically either a NHRed, Brown Leghorn or EE with coloring almost the same as the BL roos), have a chick that shows any barring? Or is barring now gone from their makeup? Thanks, still learning the color genetics, it's fascinating!

thx

The barring is totally gone from the make-up. That barring is a sex linked gene and Mama does not give it to her daughters.

If you want to get into genetics, you can play with this color calculator. I warn you, it can be addictive. It is theoretical and due to melanizers, dilution, leakage, whatever, the actual results are not as clear-cut as you might expect, but it is a lot of fun and you can learn a lot with it. Many hatchery chicks are not as pure in their colors as you would hope anyway so the actual results can be a bit confusing. I am not an expert at all, but I can maybe help you get started if you have some simple basic questions. Just PM me.

Thanks for the replies. I'd looked at the calculator before but it kinda crosses my eyes

I was pretty sure the barring was gone, I didn't think it was a recessive thing. I'll have to get some pics up on the what am I board and see who wants to play guess the papa
