Will a rooster and a hen from different homes mate?

I hatched a gorgeous French Copper Black Maran rooster which had to be given to a friend on a farm as I am in the city. I would like to breed him back with my 2 females Marans and 3 of my Lavender Ameraucanas for olive eggers. Is it possible to breed them if I take my hens to his farm? Will they just pick on each other? How long would my girls have to stay? Should I send all five at one time or send the Marans and then the Amerauancas? He came from the darkest egg I have ever seen! Thanks in advance for your help.

Chickens are not like dogs, they would have to be allowed to get to know one another for several weeks. Otherwise, the rooster is just as likely to kill your hens as he is to mate with them. They will be strangers and will need time to become part of the flock. Even then, they may not accept him or, he may never accept them.

It might be easier to look up AI in chickens and go that route. Hens that have been moved around will undergo stress and may stop laying for months. Even if a mating would occur, your hens could be so upset by the constant moving that egg laying would be off for longer then the sperm would be viable.

How old are all these birds ? Your calling the male a roo so I'm guessing the roo is a year old if not he is a cockerel.
He is a cockerel now. We are planning this for next Spring. They will be 1 year in May. Do we have to wait for the year mark? I was hoping we could try in Februrary?

Thank you very much for this. I wouldn't want to stress my sweet girls. So it is off to research AI.
