Will a tarp keep snow off the run? *Winter questions - I might keep asking more!*

Can my chickens eat the same thing year round? - layer pellets and scratch + a few treats.

Hi all,

I was wondering if a tarp will work to shade my cooks from the snow this winter. I would be able to push the snow off with a shovel if it gets to heavy. Also, would it need to be slanted?

Anything else I'll need to do to the coop/run this winter?

Thanks!

I used to use a tarp on my flat wire covered top of the run for 4 years. Had to push the snow off it and sometimes pockets of water would form that had to be lifted and drained. It will work although it is not ideal. Finally got a metal roof put on the run a year ago. It is so much nicer.

You should also consider putting clear plastic up around 3 sides of the coop. The open side should be on the side that doesn't get breezes or weather. This will keep wind from blowing in and will make the run more comfortable for the chickens. I use clear vinyl shower curtains.

How much snow do you get?

How cold does it get where you are?

I could never keep a tarp up over a run (unless it was super slanted and sprayed with Pam)... I get too much wet heavy overnight snow.
