Hi all! I am remodeling my old coop for my flock of chicks to move into in about 6 weeks. I have just found a major carpenter ant infestation. I was wondering what people would recommend I do for this? If I use a pesticide now will it harm my hens in 6 weeks when I bring them out, or is it enough time for the pesticide to go away?

Permethrin spray is fine, and see if there's a recommended dilution for the ants on the label. The Gorden's concentrate that I buy has many different applications and dilutions listed, and does a good job on insects in general.
And it's safe for chickens.

At least some insecticides intended for use around living areas and office space kill birds, reptiles and amphibians. A commercial pest control firm sprays my lab with something they say does not harm vertebrates. Snakes, toads and frogs that get in through wetlab die in relatively short order after coming into contact with sprayed surfaces. They seem to go into convulsions. European House Sparrows die quickly once they get in. I have lost two game roosters that were allowed to walk around on floor, each with 12 hours of being in lab. Signs something is wrong are evident within 2 hours.

Mice have not shown any trouble and we are not aware of any issues impacting the humans. I would prefer not to work around the stuff myself and will be working to stop the treatments.
