i have 2 yorkies and i am scared that having chicks will bring on more attention to cayotes and hawks?? can they smaill the chicks from afar?? there are lots of houses in neih

Yes, and snakes too. The unmistakeable sound of babies will attact predators.

Get bigger dogs to scare them away

That way your yorkies and your chicks will be protected!

Even if I have them enclosed in a coop at night they can still smell the chicks a mile away?? I just dont want to bring more attention to preditors for my dogs?? Is it enought to put off having chicks?? ummmm??

If a coyote can't jump over a 6' fence, they will dig under it, if they know there is something to eat on the other side. There are other four legged creatures to consider as well, such as raccoons, possums, foxes or others that might live in your area.

Yorkies and small dogs of that type and cats are becoming a favorite dining fair of the coyotes out here in Oregon, whether in town or out in the country. Despite some saying coyotes are only nocturnal, they are seen quite regularly during the daylight hours here.

if its chickens that you want to keep.. a few rules

There is no such thing as predator proof.. if the coons dont get at them.. a snake will or a hawk will or a dog will or a cat will. If you have them freeranging at all that will happen... eventually
Unless you clean the coop everyday.. disinfect it and spray eau de poop-away all day long.. you will still get more preditors. And if you clean even more.. they still will come. That is a fact.

You would have really think if its chickens that you want to keep since you need to make some accomodations to keeping them somewhat safe.I live in teh sticks with every preditor imaginable. So far I have not lost any of my birds. ABut i am seeing mroe snakes.. coonns and that pesky stray beagle alot more..

So yes.. birds are a stinky bunch and they will get you more animasl that you have bargained for eventually.

But they are SOOOO worth it. I spend more time with them that I thought I ever would. They follow me and the dog around most of the time. They talk and carry on like some old southern woman on a porch drinking mint julep on a sunny afternoon. They are fun to keep and watch. And you get a fresh leg or breast and some eggs to boost .
That is more neough for me to take a chance with other pesty critters. And its not that ahrd to keep them somewhat safe.Common sense and a good fence:)

I think you best bet would look at fencing.. estimate how much you are running.. and add it all up. You need to at leats look up some items yourself.. We cant tell you what you need or want.

We wouldnt be able to tell you unless you know how much fencing you need.. how much wood for the coop and how much for everything else.

Look at designs and go to Home Depot or Lowe`s..Most designs will tell you how much and what wood you need.

and lose the caps.
