Hi-

I'm entirely new to raising chickens. We have about a 1/4 acre backyard in Los Angeles. My coop is still under construction but we're getting there.

My question is will I need an automatic door if the run is attached to the coop? Can't I just leave the door open and let the chickens go in an out as they choose if they are secure in there?

We will only have hens in case that makes any difference.

As long as your run is secure, there's no need for an automatic door. I leave the pop door of the coop open into the run and it works just fine.
