will racoons dig?

I dont think so. My experience with raccoons was different. The raccoon reached through the chicken wire (with one inch holes) and grabbed a bantam cochin pullet and pulled her through the wire. The only part left behind was her breastbone inside the coop. What a horrific way to go.

Since then, we have doubled up the mesh, and used a tighter /smallerhole mesh at the lower edge and near the ramp into the nesting area. I trapped a raccoon the next night in a trap and released him/her 15 miles away. No returns/new raccoon assaults. (I do know there are more raccoons around though, Ive seen them on the road).

Raccoons will get in anything they want to bad enough, period. Best off to thin the herd IMO.

Those bandits get in anything they want...they will dig, climb and jump to get there too. Burying it helps but putting outward a bit will really help too.

We have had problems with raccoons in our coop. We lost 5 girls to a persistent raccoon. We eventually took down all of our chicken wire replaced it with hardware cloth, buried plastic mesh and put roof flashing 10in underground. We even took cement pavers and placed them around the edge of the coop to discourage digging. Best of luck with the raccoons they can be the biggest pests when trying to keep a backyard flock.

I put all my chickens and turkeys up at night. But I have an indoor insulated and reinforced "House" that their coop is in. I let them out each morning, back in before sun down. Keeps them safe, and they can still roam all day long.

Yep, that's the best thing you can do, put them up at night, and let a good dog roam your yard at night.
