Chehalis, WA with my chickens
This morning I went to let the chickens out, and considering I was only wearing yoga pants and a t-shirt, it was cold! There was frost on the ground, and I could see my breath! 4/5 of my chickens are Buff Orpingtons, and I know they are cold hardy, but I'm worried about my Barred Rock, Gidget. Are Barred Rocks cold hardy like Buff Orps? Also, I use a 2x4 as a roost, with the 2" edge up. Would it be possible for their feet to freeze to the roost? Has anyone ever had a chicken/chickens feet freeze to the roost? What did you do? Was the chicken/chickens ok?

If you are worried, turn your 2X4 so that the 4" side is up. That way the chickens can get their feathers around their feet and keep their toes warm.

As long as your coop has lots of ventilation at the top (you don't want a breeze blowing on your chickens but you DO want ventilation) you should be OK. As long as they can stay dry, they will be fine. It gets MUCH colder where I live than where you live and I have never once had a problem with the cold.

We have lots of ventilation in there and I've never noticed any moisture in there.

I don't know about barred specifically, but I've heard they're rather hardy. My RIR in MA were fine in the harsher winters, only issue I had with frostbite was occasionally a little on their combs which would heal over come spring. Never had a problem with frost bite on their feet, and they trudged through snow during the day.
