so most of my turkeys lost their nest of eggs to an egg eating Turkey.....now my question is will they lay again this year and try again to raise a brood or will that be it till next year? no young turkeys for me this year?
My heritage turkeys usually start laying again. I had one last year that started several nests. After a pile of eggs were laid, I would find the nest scattered. She would start a new nest. This happened three or four times. Most of my hens hatched there broods in May. That turkey finally got a hatch in September.
My Red Bourbons started laying around 50 days back just a few here and there.
The end of April and the Beginning of may I have seen an increase from 3 to 6 eggs a week to 12 to 16 eggs a week from 6 Hens.
I was told by a friend that the weather has a good amount of effect on the laying the better the weather longer warmer summer months the longer and the greater the egg production and of the course the hours of sun light more sun more eggs.
I have noticed with my Turkeys as well with my Chickens that if we have 2 to 3 days of dark rainy weather the egg production drops off.
Also a note to Turkey and Chickens owners I keep all my eggs shells and cook them in the microwave and crush them up and feed them back to my birds cooking keeps the birds from getting them a taste of eating there own eggs and as we also feed them oyster shells this keeps them up on there calcium and prevents thin egg shells when the lay.
You can also put the eggs shells in the oven for a few minutes this would work as well.
