Will they use oyster shells as grit?

I am providing grit and oyster shells both to my 9 pullets (20 weeks). So far I am keeping them confined to the coop and run and not free ranging them any for a few weeks until they get settled in. I was wandering if I did not provide the actual grit would they use the small bits of oyster shells as grit if it is needed? I didn't know if I needed to offer both or just the bag of oyster crushed oyster shells? They look to be about the same size.

Oyster Shell is for added calcium in the diet. It is too soft to be considered grit.
Grit is usually crushed granite which is used to grind the food in the gizzard.
IMO both have their separate, but unique purposes, so I provide both.

Thank you, I kind of figured that was the case but I was looking at my bag of grit and my bag of calcium I thought they looked pretty similar, other then the color. I didn't think about the shells not being hard enough.

No problem

I see your line of thinking. I have found that both the OS and Grit lasts a long time. I buy in the 25# bags (still have a small bag of chick grit leftover too) and have plenty. I would say depending on how many chickens you have both will last at least a year or so.
I just put some in separate dishes (secured to a post) and leave it for them free choice. They get what they need.
