Will this cross produce colored eggs?

In Feb. I went to a swap and purchased along with some RIR bantams a crossbred layer chick that was supposed to be half Leghorn and half Araucana. We were told that it would lay blue eggs if it was a girl. It feathered out white with some dark blue/black feathers dotted around here or there, with a nice pea comb, without tufts but it has a nice, fluffy beard. But, it figures, I get a rooster for the only layer bird I bought

. So, it seems that I won't figure out this mystery by myself. Could a cross like this lay blue eggs? If we cross him on some brown layers, would the offspring lay olive eggs?

If the Araucana was a pure-bred bird, then it would have had two copies of the blue egg gene. In that case, crossing with a Leghorn would yield a bird heterozygous for the blue egg gene, and it would lay blue/green eggs.

However, if the bird used in the cross was really an easter egger, than it might have been only heterozygous for the blue egg gene itself, in which case there's only a 50% chance that the bird would lay colored eggs.

I think you should get a few more chicks and find out for yourself - colored eggs are fun!
