What breed might have these characteristics...in order of priority?

1. Be cold hardy and lay through the winter
2. Good forager and alert
3. A moderate size frame
4. Interesting plumage and egg color

It may be my perfect bird!
Thanks for looking, Kevin

Easter Egger. And for winter laying, you really need to supplement lighting. Most young pullets will lay through their first winter, but after that 99% of hens will quit if they don't get enough light to stimulate egg production.

Wyandottes are also excellent winter layers...and the rose comb helps with the whole frostbite issue that can arise with a single comb. Their plumage is great and comes in several colors, so you could have a couple of each (I love all the laced colors). They do just have brown eggs, but they're a good size and lay well. Just a suggestion! Hope you get chickies that make you happy, either way!!! Good luck!!
