Someone is giving away a bunch of sash windows near me, but they don't have screens - are screens important to keep out bugs and bees? I plan to put hardware cloth over the outside of the window anyway, so couldn't I just staple screening underneath that?

I am using hard wire cloth. I don't think screens are that important as you will have open air access via the chick door anyway. Whats going to come in will come in.

window screen and hardware cloth is twice the work, one of which would be wasted (the screen)

Window screen's will get clogged with all the dust that chicken's can produce, between litter and dander etc...Just go with the hardware cloth.
