Hi everyone! We broke ground on the new coop and are very excited. Question on windows -

1. What are some good suppliers of windows?
2. Is 14 x 21 a good size
3. Coop will be 8 x 10 - three or four windows?

Thanks,

See if you have an architectural salvage place near you and get some inexpensive used windows. Around here we have several including Habitat for Humanity ReStore and some independent operations such as Community Forklift. I paid $12.50 for a 22x32 sliding window that retails for $100.

I found new and used windows on Craigslist. I just bought a brand new double hung double pane for 5 bucks. They generally ranged from 20-70 and up. Does not hurt to look I was not expecting to find anything.

Windows that slide open and closed are very nice to have. Add a few on the south side and 1 or 2 more on another side for cross ventilation. They offer natural light, solar heating in the Winter, and ventilation in good weather. I just get mine at Lowe's or Home Depot. They seem to always have a few that are marked down or on sale. I think mine were 20 or 25 dollars for a 2 x4 ft double hung with screen. Of course you may want to beef up the screen by covering with hardware cloth. I cover my windows with fencing so the goats don't knock them out. Hope this helps.

Antique stores! that is how i got all mine, i backed the hole with hardware cloth and i prop them open based on the weather! Nice wood windows, i don't think i paid more than 10-15$ a piece.

I got all the window for my coop off E-Bay. They were shipped to me, and I lucked out and didn't have one broken pane. Two were old 6 pane windows out of an old barn. The other two were salvaged basement windows out of an old house.

We've begun construction on an 8 x 10 coop, too. We started planning last year and began collecting windows. Our windows and our tin roofing were salvaged from a friend in roofing construction. They are windows that were removed/replaced in re-modelings and the tin had a few cosmetic dings and couldn't be used on a new roof. All would have ended up in the landfill had we not hoarded them. So glad we did!

I've begun a page to track the coop construction and you can see how we used the different sized windows. We even incorporated two skylights into the body of the coop. The page is here> https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/virginia-woodland-coop

My theory was that the more salvaged windows we used, the less lumber we'd have to buy. I love the light and ventilation and the way it's looking. If you have any friends in the construction business, ask them about saving windows for you. I was amazed at how often windows are replaced.

Good luck on your coop!
