I've just got to do it! My Birds have reached 4 months and the birds are flying over the run area fence or roosting on top in an effort to free range and explore. We are surrounded by thick woods and are afraid they may not find their way back. I am building an enclosed pen area off the front of the coop to prevent them from flying the coop this week and protect them from predators. Not sure if wing clipping will help, but have heard it will. Has anyone done this and will it help keep them grounded?

Yes it will help. Clip one wing so they can still get away from trouble.

This is a good youtube demo of the right way to cut the feathers. Be very careful to cut only the flight feathers and not the shorter one or they will bleed and that can be bad. Don't be discouraged from doing this. Watch the video. One wing is all that's necessary. Thanks for the reminder that its time to do my 3 leghorns (the Buff Orpies sing: "I can't dance and I'm too fat to fly"

Thank you for link. I had forgotten which ones to clip. Its been over 15 years :)

This link was very good. Helpful and entertaining as well! It has surely helped keep my chickens from flying the coop! Thanks.

Clipping did not deter my birds at all. The one hen that escapes the most has had both wings clipped. The others have had just 1 wing clipped and 2 of them keep flying the fence. GL!!

Hmmm. How high is your fence??

We had a close call last week with an eagle. I think adrenaline gave my BO super-wings to fly over the 6 foot fence. Unbelievable. I am looking to getting poultry netting to top the big run.
