Winter and water

I use a Galvanized waterer.
In cold weather I set it on a heated base. 20191207_092057_resized.jpg . If you don't have electricity, you can use a rubber bowl and dump and refill as needed. 20200215_090209_resized.jpg . I also hang a 43 watt Halogen bulb in a reflector to keep water from freezing. GC

Many people use what I do. First you need a container. I use a tote with lid. Some use buckets; others use large jugs. Add horizontal nipples, not the vertical kind. Then put a stock tank deicer in your container. I use a 250 watt deicer that has a thermostat on it and is rated for use in plastic.

My tote holds about 11 gallons of water. That is more than enough to last a dozen chickens for over a week. I also live in Northern Montana where it is common to have temperatures in the -20s F. Been using this system for 5 years and never had it freeze.

I use a shallow stainless steel steam table pan, with a Gesail bird bath deicer. The water never freezes with this method and the deicer only uses around 50W. I then throw the pans in the dishwasher to sanitize them. They do tend to get dirty with shavings/dirt though. With this method I change the water every day and sanitize the pans at least every other day, but I like to keep the water super clean.

I just do the rubber bowls in their run and refill every day and sometimes 2x a day if it is really cold. I don't have electric down by the coop. Has been working okay so far but I'm in PA, which is cold, but not the coldest in terms of winters.
