How cold and what type of exposure/housing will they have, and any roos? There's really quite a few standard breeds to choose from depending on if you have any other considerations besides egg production alone (temperament, egg size/color, dual purpose, etc.). Just about any of the standard top egg layer breeds will do ok in cold climates but if for egg production alone, leghorns would probably top the list, with, like a couple of other breeds, some comb care if needed. Small combs run less risk for frostbite issues. A few other hardy, good winter layer breeds....plymouth rocks/BR's, easter eggers, buff orpingtons, RI reds, wyandottes... For temperament and all around good winter layers of med-large eggs, my choices would be barred rocks (brown eggs), easter eggers (variety of colors), and orps (brown eggs).
I'm sure others will come along with lots of good input. Btw,
You can check out Henderson's list of breeds. There's a snowflake in the egg column for the breeds that are better winter layers. There's also a column for hardiness information.
