Winter Feeding

I am very new to chickens. (my dad had chickens when I was a child but I didn't do much just gathered eggs.)
I have 14 altogether. I feed them the layer mesh. I only have 1 or 2 laying but I only get 1 egg a day. I put hot water in with the layer so by the time I am done mixing it up it is warm. after I started this, a few days later my 6 year old son gathered his first egg. Maybe the water didn't make a difference but it is worth a try.

I am not getting any eggs. Most of mine are too young but here is what I do. I feed them their chick food free choice. If it is cold I will give them some cracked corn or scratch. When they get up and it is cold outside and they rush the food, I will sometimes sprinkle some scratch on the ground so that there is less arguing.

My coop is small and so food and water are outside.

I make sure that they have clean water every morning, and when I go out to check on them, throughout the day.
