I have googled and searched backyard chickens and many other websites. I can’t seem to really understand a wire floor for poults and ducks.

Is it basically a framed in piece of galvanized wire (small gauge) about 2 inches off of the floor? I’ve never raised my ducklings on it. This is the first time I’ve raised poults. I’m curious if it’s really that simple? I’m also raising my turkeys with the packing peanut male chicks. I’ve read that’s a good idea? Is it? How small does the wire have to be to avoid trapped bird feet? I read a piece of burlap the first few days is a good idea, makes sense.

Is the wire floor a must? Are they really that fragile if they get poop on their feet they’ll die? Or is it more of a cleaning convenience? I would love some feedback from those turkey raisers out there! Thank you!

Ugh... just my opinion, but I HATE seeing chickens or poults on wire. It doesn't look like it feels good on their feet and they don't have any shavings to sleep in. I see the point in keeping ducklings' water on wire, but I don't see the point in doing it at all for chickens or poults. Just shavings- keep them clean and dry, just like any other babies!

I agree 100 %!!!!!

:thumbsup

Wire floor in a brooder is torcher to a baby's feet (in my opinion). Some people do it. I did it one time and I regret doing it. The poult's toes ended up being crooked. I will NEVER make that mistake EVER again! :he :smack

Oh! I'm SO glad I posted this! All of my research made it seem like it was THE way to go. Thank you both so much for taking the time to reply. :) I definitely won't be using wire under my little poults.
