Today starts the new coop building project. I am going to power wash the block wall that the coop/run will sit in front of and get it ready to be painted. Once that is done, we need to add lattice for privacy and will then start on the foundation. We will be doing this slowly, buying materials each payday as we can afford it. I also have a bunch of stuff to sell on Craigslist and will put that money towards it as well. Anyone need a wedding dress that was never worn? LOL!!! Darn daughter. Anyway, I don't want to skimp on this coop as it the last one I will ever get and it needs to be built right and last. Plus I am going to have to pay someone to build this thing, unless my husband decides he is willing to do it.

So far I have collected 9 vintage windows. One for the back wall in front of their roost. It will be stationary and for light only as there will be ventilation above them on all four sides of the coop and run. The other 8 are all the same size and I will use them in the doors on each long side of the coop. I plan to have the sides of the coop open fully for ease of cleaning, but I want a window in each door with a hardware cloth screen so I lock them in at night and still let in lots of fresh air.

I have a 4' wide hutch ready to be painted and I will use it for my nest boxes. I am taking the doors off the hutch and will use them as the frames for the doors outside the coop to access the nest boxes, since they are all ready the exact right size. I will removed the glass panels and attach wood to them so they are secure. I hope to find a couple of vintage tin ceiling panels to place in the middle of each door for decoration. I also have the 2 x 4's for the roosts and will use the old ladder they currently use for a roost, out in their run.

I will start a thread later to post pictures of our progress. It is going to be a cottagey, shabby chic coop because we live in a small cottage and it will be surrounded by trees and an English cottage garden. Wish me luck! I am going to need it for this build.

Good luck!

I've thought of little else for a couple of months now, so we could get this done right. However, I have been thwarted already because I can't get the power washer started nor can I find the wand nozzle thing that goes on it. Arghhh!!! I will have to ask my husband to help me I suppose.

But the good news is that I have my very own paint sprayer and I know how to use that very well. So once the wall is clean I can get going without any help. I also got the compost pile that was sitting in front of the wall moved and the space is raked sort of level.

Once the wall is painted I want to go ahead and lay the row of pavers that will go back there. I am putting the plain, gray ones along the back of the coop because I already have a few dozen of them and I will put cobblestone pavers around the sides and front where you will see them. Then we can attach the lattice to the wall and then onto the coop foundation! This is going to be so much fun!

Oh happy day! Husband got off work early, took me out to dinner and came home and power washed the wall for me!!! What a guy! So baring any rain tomorrow, I can paint the wall and lay the pavers. Then on to figure out how to install the lattice.

I will be making a coop page when it is done to show all the steps. I am going to try to draw up a plan to post but I think the pictures I take will tell the story better. This is going to be an all summer project going step by step and payday by payday. Hope to be done by October.

He is a good man and I am going to keep him. We just had our 38th anniversary a couple months ago. He is not very good at construction type things though, but he tries. The worse one was a cornice for the window. I thought we would be in divorce court by the time he figured out how to cut the crown moulding.

I just don't know how I am going to tell him that I need two more now for the living room windows.

Yes, we do have an enchanted little place. Or at least it will be when I am done with it. It needs redone from top to bottom, inside and out, but there is something special about it.

A friend of mine would be so thrilled to hear all of that. She gets so upset at how many women complain about their husbands. She lost hers' suddenly when her children were young and she just wishes that they knew how lucky they are. Sounds like you know ....and I definitely know with mine also.
