Wonder what could have done it!

The other day I was sitting on my back porch when I noticed our huge neighborhood Red Tail Hawk in a tree watching one of my yard kittens, he's about 6 months old. Mr.Hawk then swoops down on said kitten, got right above him and must have realized what it was and flew up and over my fence, it was weird to watch.

I guess I should have better explained. The coop and run are all one in the same. I do have a roof on the top which is steel from a construction site, and now I have two layers of the chicken wire up for most of the coop (just not where we have wood). Although, I am in the process of getting the thicker wire to wrap around (since we found the holes) the coop. Also DH is planning on installing elec wire around the coop that will be turned on at night. I really think what saved us that night are the dogs. They are "parked" at each side of the coop and are with in reach but can not touch the coop. Between them and then us running out there when we heard them barking and all the rucus... we scared it off. Guess I should have let the dogs of the leashes and let them get it. Hind site is 20 20.

I do appreciate all the replies... I thought maybe it was a coon too but was not sure. As for the hawk... well the girls have been locked in for a couple days now because of their laying eggs elsewhere. And I did not see it today, but for the most part they do free range. I also have plenty of cover for them. So I am not to worried about that. I think the only reason it swooped the way it did was because I was out giving them a treat (frozen corn) that is why I felt so bad. Well, I now will not give them treats out in the open, I will be sure to give them treats under the trees that we have all over.

Again thank you all. I just wanted to share what happened. And to find out what you all thought might have done it. I really need to hipe on the son to make sure those traps are set everynight too.

Country girl, beautiful cat, I am so sorry for what heppend.

by the way, no it could not have been a bear ... the holes that were ripped were about 3 of those holes in the wire... I would have thought a bear would have done alot more damage.

Glad it was not the bear. Someone on an other post a couple of days ago mentioned putting flour out around the perimeter to see if you could tell what kind of tracks might be left in it. I wonder if that would work. I'm just glad you did not lose any birds. I saw a hawk dead on the road about a quarter mile away from my house. I guess it must have been trying to catch something on the road and got hit. I kind of hope it was the one I have seen flying over my house every so often.

Lisa - Thanks for the idea, I would have never thought of that. I will have to wait until the storm passes and the weather gets nice again. But, I will try the flour idea just to see what I can see.
I too am glad whatever it was did not get my babies! Yes even though they are 18 and 22 weeks I still call them my babies.

Thanks again.

I can remember when Fluffy disappeapered too. It was a sad day for all of us. I've been thinking about Fluffy these last few days and wondered what the latest was. I guess now I know. Doesn't make it any easier. So sorry about that countrygirl.
