okay i have read pretty much read the entire DLM thread and quite a few other threads also and am not finding any info on using wood pellets for bedding, etc. i was wondering what the pros and cons are of pellets vs. shavings and if the pellets are recommended at all for the DLM method. thanks for all the info on this forum! what an education!

I started with pine shavings but at one week went to wood pellets. I found the pine shavings to be very dusty and I have allergies. So far I'm very satisfied with the wood pellets. I usd pine shavings in the tray for my older chicks who are currently in a Chick-n-Hutch from TSC and do not have allergy problem with that.

Good luck with your chicks.

My feed store starts the day old chicks on pine pellets from day 1. I did paper towels 2 days and then straight to pine pellet. They're great!

I have read here the pine pellets work really well for DLM. You just shuffle around the whole pellets and scrape up the dusty stuff, then add fresh on top. I also bought something called Sweet PDZ that is used in horse stalls for ammonia and dampness. I think it works as (or is) Diatonateous Earth (DE). I'm moving new chicks into a new coop in about 3 weeks and I am going to sprinkle a cup of Sweet PDZ down, then dump in pellets. I am going to use poop boards, so the pellets should last a long time with just a little stirring. I plan to spread some wood shaving on my poop boards to make them clean up easy.

Not exerienced, but it the plan I came up with after lots and lots of reading!
