Wood shavings

Hi everyone, I am also new to raising chickens I own 4 leghorn, 1 red sex link, 1 RIR, 1 BR, and 1 Ameraucana. Well my question is I've switched from straw to pine wood shaving in my coop they seem to be eating some of it, is that normal and safe?

They may be eating them out of curiosity...shouldn't last long. You might post newspapers down on top of the shaving for a few days - until they can distinguish food from wood shavings.
