Worming chickens

I am new at raising chickens, and a while back I spoke to a family member who raises her own (I cannot contact her now or I would to get my question answered), and she told me to take wood ashes, put them in old pantyhose and let that sit in the water and it would take care of worms. I cannot remember if this was for chickens or dogs. Has anyone done this or know of this being done, and which it was for, or both?
Thanks for any help!!!

And before someone posts other "natural" methods, feeding them cucumber, pumpkin seeds, melons, etc... won't kill worms either. At least not to any extent that would put a dent in a worm load. Maybe it would piss off the worms a bit.

Same for feeding them diatomaceous earth. The method of action of DE is to slice up the exoskeletons of bugs, essentially making them dehydrate via moisture loss thru their exoskeleton. Feeding DE defeats the purpose since as soon as it gets wet, it is just......mud. I can assure you that the inside of a chicken is wet.
