Sorry for your loss. I would check your other chickens for stuck on droppings, and control flies around your coop and run. In hot weather this can be common. Also besides soiled vents, a peck wound or injury can attract flies and maggots.
 
Definitely. I checked the others and they are fine. Our coop is pretty much fly-resistant. I think it must have happened on the day when I was cleaning the coop and had them in their outside cage which is definitely not fly-proof. What I question is why the hen had stuck poop in the first place. Maybe she had diarrhea and had other issues before that. I also noticed her comb was not as upright and bright as the others which might indicate something else was going on? I guess we are all learning things on the go. I still feel so bad the hen had to pay the highest price for me not knowing it all. I am grateful for all the help I find on this forum.
