Yesterday morning, I checked the eggs my RIR has been setting on and saw that 2 eggs were being pipped. yay! when i got home yesterday afternoon, 2 chicks were alive and well. this morning there was one chick that was literally JUST coming out of the shell when i lifted mamma's chest back and this evening there is a 4th. there are 3 more eggs under her and i dont' see evidence of pipping. i left food and water out for mamma and chicks (chick starter only as i was told it's okay for mom to eat that for a while) and there is no evidence that anything was eaten or water drank. is this normal? there are other hens in my flock but mamma and babies have their own area fenced off with hardware wire - it's about 5' long and 2' wide - didn't want to take a chance on the other hens or rooster killing the chicks. i'm a first timer at this, did my homework, but am concerned that there appears to be nothing eaten or drank and it's been a bit more than 24 hours for the oldest chick. advice or calming words please! also, if eggs still aren't pipped in morning, should i remove them? thank you and hope i get replies!!!

The babies can actually live on their yolk for up to 3 days. Don't panic just yet-mama will show them what to do.
Just keep an eye on them and if you feel like they aren't drinking or eating(at about 60 hours old), dip their little beaks in the water so they know what to do.
I would leave the remaining eggs for another couple of days(21 days is really an average).

Hi, can't answer yer question about the unhatched eggs, but it is completely normal w/ the no eating. The fuzzies can go up to 3 days without food/water. When momma is ready she will take the wee ones to the food/water and show them what to do. Good job separating them from the other gremlins, yes chickens can be VERY nasty with the babies. Sit back and enjoy the show!
